In my 2nd year my friend and I made an app to make it easier for people in the Netherlands to find cruelty free cosmetics. It can be a hustle to find the brands that aren’t tested on animals an often you have to look on different websites to find these products. There are multiple apps for the United States but very little for Dutch brands. We wanted to change this and make it more accessible for Dutch people to switch to cruelty free cosmetics, we also made it easier to find vegan or vegetarian cosmetic product. In the app we also made a feature that you can scan a product and it shows you if it’s cruelty free, vegan, vegetarian or all three. Mostly convenient when you’re in a store.
To make it extra clear to people which product are cruelty free I designed some icons to make it visible in a blink of an eye. The monkey represents “cruelty free” because monkeys are one of the most tested on animals.
The shark represents “vegetarian” because squalene used in cosmetics is made from shark liver in most cases. The sheep represents “vegan” because lanoline is made from sheep wool.
The difference between vegan and vegetarian is that with vegan you use no animal products, if you are vegetarian you only use products where the animals didn’t have to be killed.
